Our collective experience has shown the need for a more nuanced approach to the study of mediation and conflict transformation than is usually offered in professional education curriculums. We believe that to be a successful leader, in the global or domestic arena, requires an interdisciplinary approach that will focus on the anatomy of conflict, the role of culture in conflict, conflict management and mediation, human development, and personal leadership. Our theory is that leaders who recognize the impact of culture on conflict, who are aware and connected to their own development, and who have the required conflict skills can make the difference between chaos and societal stability. Our goal is to work with students to create a unique learning experience in the context of practical approaches to engaging and transforming conflict.
The program introduces students to the field of conflict transformation. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the academic and practical tools needed to work on issues related to peace and justice. Specifically, the program:
Introduces theoretical tools for the analysis of conflict;
- Offers training in the methods of conflict resolution;
- Imparts ethical, moral, and philosophical insights into the process of creating peaceful social change;
- Provides opportunities for experiential learning through internship programs; and
- Provides opportunities for student scholarship through participation in the writing and editing of the Journal of Conflict Transformation
